Pixel Fawn

I think I am doing great thinking of ideas for tutorials all by myself. Now my dear, sweet, hubby is getting into the act and making suggestions...LOL We were packing away the Christmas items when he said, "Hunny, this would be a nice pixel tut." He was holding up a potholder that had Santa holding a baby fawn. Now, what can you do? Since this was, really, the first time he showed enthusiasm for my sitting all day at the computer writing tutorials, I took him up on his idea. Another tutorial is born!

You will be using the fawn image below. Right click on it and Save Picture As, save it to a folder of your choice. You will be working with multiple layers, so remember to SAVE OFTEN.

#1 -- Make your foreground color a nice brown, I am using #cd7947, and make your background color a darker brown, I am using #5e321a. Open your outline in PSP. In your layer pallet, right click the layer and Promote to Background Layer.

#2 -- Use the Magic Wand, Tolerance 0 and Contiguous CHECKED. Holding down the SHIFT key, click the WHITE areas and then hit the DELETE key. You might need to ZOOM in to get the NOSE and EYE areas. Don't forget the two HOOVES and the TAIL. Name this layer OUTLINE.

#3 -- With the Magic Wand, click INSIDE the BODY area. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this BODY. Flood Fill with the foreground color.

#4 -- Selections/Float. Effects/3D/Cutout and apply these settings; Vertical & Horizontal 1; Opacity 100; Blur 25 and the color is your darker color, #5e321a. Select NONE.

#5 -- This is what you should have so far.....

#6 -- Click on the OUTLINE layer to make it active. With the Magic Wand, click INSIDE the TAIL area. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this TAIL. Flood Fill with the foreground color. Selections/Float. Apply the Cutout, changing the Vertical & Horizontal to 0 and the Blur to 10. Select NONE.

#7 -- Click on the OUTLINE layer to make it active. With the Magic Wand and holding down the SHIFT key, click INSIDE the HOOVES area. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this HOOVES. Flood Fill with BLACK.

#8 -- I want to add some depth to the HOOVES, so I used an Inner Bevel with the settings below.

#9 -- This is what my HOOVES look like.

#10 -- Click on the OUTLINE layer to make it active. With the Magic Wand click INSIDE the NOSE area. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this NOSE. Flood Fill with BLACK. KEEP selected.

#11 -- Add a NEW Raster layer. Make the foreground color WHITE. Using the Paintbrush, make a small white line on the tip of the NOSE. Adjust/Blur/Gaussian Blur with the Radius of 2. Select NONE.

    &nbps; &nbps;

#12 -- Click on the OUTLINE layer to make it active. With the Magic Wand click INSIDE the area UNDER the eye. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this UNDER EYE. Flood Fill with BLACK. Select NONE.

#13 -- Click on the OUTLINE layer to make it active. With the Magic Wand click INSIDE the EYE. Add a NEW Raster Layer, naming this EYE. Flood Fill with the dark brown, #5e321a. Selections/Float. Go to Effects/3D/Cutout and use the settings below.

#14 -- KEEP selected. Click on the Preset Shapes Tool and locate the ELLIPSE. Apply a SMALL oval on the LEFT side of the EYE. You might need to UNDO this and reposition the cursor, as it will fill in more of the eye than expected. SEE images below.

#15 -- KEEP selected. Add a NEW Raster layer. Using the Paintbrush, make a small white line on the LOWER edge of the EYE and at the UPPER LEFT.. Adjust/Blur/Gaussian Blur with the Radius of .75. Select NONE.

#16 -- HIDE the OUTLINE layer (RED X). Click on one of the other layers to make it active, Merge/Merge Visible. Name this layer FAWN. UNhide the outline layer.

#17 -- Since this is a FAWN, we need to add some spots. Add a NEW Raster layer, naming it SPOTS. Make your foreground color WHITE. Click on your Airbrush tool size 4 and use the settings below.

#18 -- Make some small dashes on the back area of the fawn.

#19 -- Adjust/Blur/Guassian Blur with a Radius of 2. Lower the Opacity of this layer to 60%.

#20 -- ZOOM in so that you can get a closer view of the HEAD. Using the FREEHAND Selection Tool and holding down the SHIFT key, outline a section INSIDE of EACH EAR.. Add a NEW Raster layer.

#21 -- With the Airbrush, size 10, foreground color WHITE. Spray INSIDE the Marching Ants. Adjust/Blur/Guassian Blur with Radius 4.

#22 -- KEEP selected. Add a NEW Raster layer. With the Airbrush, SAME settings, foreground color PINK, I am using #eda8ee. Spray INSIDE part of the EARS. Adjust/Blur/Guassian Blur with Radius 4. Select NONE.

#23 -- Use the FREEHAND Selection Tool. Foreground color WHITE. Add a NEW Raster layer. Outline the LOWER part of the JAW. Flood Fill with WHITE. Lower Opacity to 60%. Select NONE.

#24 -- Merge/Merge Visible. Now you can Export as a tube and save for later use.
