Draftstop

When I was a child, I remembered my grandmother having these long-legged stuffed toys laying across the floor by the doors. She would sit for hours and sew them and then give them to neighbors and relatives. They were usually made with colored gingham but I can remember some were made like patchwork. she would make them in different shapes; small doll-like figures, animals, all with long legs. She even had some like snakes and some were just plain, long tubes. She would fill them with sand, rice, or flax seeds; and when she made one for me to play with, she filled it with wool fibers. She would tell me stories and say that "They were House Guardians and kept out evil spirits at night." Only later, as I got older, did I realize that they were actually called "Door Draft Stops"; They were to keep the cold drafts from coming through the base of the doors at night.

Remembering this one night while talking with hubby, I thought I could make one. Not only with scraps of material I had accumulated, but also in PSP....*S* You can download the Bunny Draftstop selections HERE

Start with a new canvas 400X400. we will crop it later. Change your foreground to a pattern of your choosing and background color to NULL. You will need to change your Pattern Scale to 25 or 50, depending on which pattern you use, the choice is yours.

NOTE:I am using a WHITE background so that the sections will show in the screen shots.

Step 1      Add a New Raster layer. Go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load Selections from Disk. Locate the folder where you saved the Doorstop Bunny selections and Load 1-DSBlegs-pjk. You will see the Marching Ants, now Flood Fill with the Pattern. With it STILL selected, go to Selections/Float.

Step 2      Effects/3-D/Cutout and use these setting; Vertical 5, Horizontal 5, Opacity 50 & Blur 10. Use a darker shade of a color in your Pattern. Repeat Cutout changing the Vertical & Horizontal to (Minus) -5.

Step 3      Selections/Select None.

Repeat Step 1 above, but go to Selections/Load-Save Selections/Load Selections from Disk and Load 2-DSBarm-pjk. Again Flood Fill with the Pattern. Selections/Float.

Repeat Step 2 & 3. Selections/Select None.

Duplicate this Arm layer. Image/Mirror.

For the remaining Selections, you will be REPEATING Steps 1, 2 & 3 above. Where there are changes in the Cutout, I will add them for each section. Remember to ADD a New Raster Layer for EACH new Selection.

Selection 3-DSBbody-pjk --- REPEAT steps 1, 2 & 3. CUTOUT-- changing the Vertical & Horizontal to 10. Repeat Cutout changing Vertical & Horizontal to (Minus) -10.
