Left Side Border

Beginner Level

This is a simple tutorial for those who do not know how to make side borders for web pages (but have some understanding of PSP). There are other Border Tutorials, but some can get confusing, and I will try to keep this as simple as possible.

You will be making a very basic left side border. You'll learn how to copy and paste an image into a new image.

First off, choose a picture that you would like to use for a border. I am using one that I made. You can use scenery, flowers, people, or one that you made yourself. Then make a copy of it (hold down the SHIFT key and click the D key). Close out the original. Resize your copy to 200X150. I will be referring to this image as PHOTO throughout this tutorial.

Open a new image making the background white, make the image 175 high and 1200 wide. I will refer to this as BACKGROUND image for this tutorial. The settings should look like this for the new image:

The background image may look smaller than it really is because PSP will have reduced the viewing size to fit it into your window. You can use the ZOOM Tool to enlarge it (one click should be enough).

Now, follow these steps:

1. Click on your photo to make it active.

2. Go to Edit > Copy

3. Click on the top bar of your background image.

4. Go to Edit > Paste > As New Selection.

5. The new selection is glued to your cursor and you can move it around to position it where you want, then fix it in place by clicking the left mouse button. Place it to the very left side of the new image. Like this:

Image 1

If you decide you need to move it a bit more, as long as the marching ants are showing, click on the Move Tool , then you can move the selection again. Do NOT deselect yet.

Next we add the drop shadow. To do this leave the image as it looks in Image 1 and follow these steps:

1. Go to Effects > 3D Effects > Drop Shadow

2. Set your settings to Vertical & Horizontal 4, Opacity 100, Blur 7 and color Black. Click OK.

3. Go to Selections > Select None.

4. It should now look like this:

Save your work as a .pspimage in case you may want to edit it in the future. Then you can save it again as a JPG file, or a GIF file, when you get it to look how you want it to.

Here are some other ideas you can use for a Left Sided Border. I have cropped these so that they would use less space, but kept the height so you could see the images.

I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial as much as I did writing it.
