This tutorial was written in August 2005 and © by Sorcha. You may make a copy of this tutorial or print it out for your own personal use ONLY. What you create from my tutorials belong to you to do with as you wish....I hold no claim to them other than my tutorial rights.
This might be considered a beginners tutorial, as it only used the Effects that come with PSP 9 (but I do believe you can do this with PSP 7 & 8). I have not used any fancy Plugins or Filters in this tutorial. These are all done by using one or two Effects.
This is my own creation and any resemblances to other tutorials are strictly coincidental.
You can use any photo of people, flowers, or make your own multi colored image. They will all come out different and look nothing like the original. This contains instructions for five different effects. These can be used for frames, backgrounds for web pages, or anything that your imagination can conceive.
I am using the same two flower photos throughout the tutorial so that you can see the changes. Please feel free to use my photos if you want. You just need to left click on them and it will take you to a larger image, then right click and SAVE AS into a folder of your choice. These are my own photos of flowers that I have taken.
Open one of the images in PSP (I sized the photos to 300X300, but you can resize them if you want them smaller). Feel free to play around with the setting in each effect. I am listing the ones I used so that you can see what the effects are.
1. Simple Seamless Tile
Go to the top of your screen and click on Effect/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling
Vertical 0, Horizontal 2 Transition 100 … make sure to tick Corner, Bidirectional and Linear.
It is that simple. Here are the effects that I got.
2. Kaleidoscope Tile
Go to the top of your screen and click on Effect/Reflection/Kaleidoscope
Vertical and Horizontal 50, Rotation 90 Scale 20, number of Petals 6, number of Orbits 2, Radial 50, and tick Reflect.
Another easy, one step background.
3. Easy Patterned Background Tile
Go to Effects/Reflection/Pattern. Vertical and Horizontal Offsets 0, Rotation 90, Scale 0, Number of Columns 3, Number of Rows 3, Vertical and Horizontal Shift 0.
4. Go to Effect/Distortion Effect/Polar Coordinates. Tick Rectangle to Polar and Repeat.
Then go to Effect/Image Effects/Seamless Tiling. Using the same settings as above in #1, but change the Transition to 50.
5. Go to Effect/Artistic Effects/Solarize. Adjust the Threshold to 80. Then, go to Effects/Reflection/Pattern -- Vertical and Horizontal Offsets 5, Rotation 90, Scale 0, Number of Columns 3, Number of Rows 20, Vertical and Horizontal Shift 0. Then go to Adjust/Brightness and Contrast/Brightness Contrast. Set Brightness at 35 and Contrast to 40.

I went one set further with this image. I went to Adjust/Hue and Saturation/Colourize. I set the Hue to 43 and Saturation to 227.

Resize your images to finish off. If usually resize to 200X200. You can change settings, colorize, play with the Hues, and even repeat the effects to come up with different patterns. Have fun and I hope you enjoyed making these simple and easy background tiles.
I hope that you enjoyed this tutorial.
