Animated Penguin

Thought I would try my hand at another vector-drawn, animated cartoon figure. This is very simple and I am under the impression that you know how to work with Vectors and multiple layers. This tutorial is my own creation and any resemblance to any other is strictly coincidental.

This will not only show you how to make an Animated Penguin, but it will also show you how to make it as a tube. So this will be two tutorials in one...:)

I have kept my Screen Shot smaller than my work canvas to help save on your loading time.

Open a new Image 400X400, transparent.

MAIN BODY

Using the Preset Shape Tool, find Ellipse, Antialias and Create as Vector BOTH checked, solid line and Width 3.

Make your foreground color BLACK and the Background color WHITE.

Watching your numbers in your screens lower bar, move your mouse to x135 y170. Click and drag down and to the right till you get x250 y330. Release the mouse. I always readjust my Vectors, so I moved it more to the center to give me more room to work with.

Click on the Pen Tool and holding down the Control key and move your mouse between the top and left NODE until you see ADD. Click to add a new NODE. We are going to make the top of the Ellipse a little flatter, but not much. You can adjust yours as you see fit.

Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Name this BODY.

Save as a pspimage file. Remember to save OFTEN when working with Vectors.

Make the Background and Foreground colors BLACK. Click on the Preset Tool and make a circle x120 y68 and drag down to x230 y176. Again, you can add NODES and adjust to your liking. We do not want a perfectly round head.

Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Name this HEAD.

SAVE

Now make a smaller, longer oval (using the Ellipse) on the right side of the BODY. Click on the Rotate Handle and rotate it slightly so that it angles to the right.

Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Name this WING.

SAVE

Making sure the WING layer is still highlighted; right click on the layer and Duplicate it. Go to Image/Mirror and then use the Deform Tool to adjust the angle for the left side of the BODY.

SAVE

You should now have four layers, BODY, HEAD, WING and COPY of WING. Right click on the COPY of WING layer and Merge/Merge Down. This will merge the WINGS and still keep the WING layer named.

SAVE

FACE

With your Foreground color BLACK and Background color WHITE, use the Ellipse, make a small oval inside the HEAD for an eye, rotating to angle it.

Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Name this EYE.

SAVE

Make the Background color BLACK and the Foreground NULL. Using the Ellipse, make a small circle inside the EYE for the pupil. Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Merge/Merge Down.

Duplicate the EYE layer. Image/Mirror. Use the Deform Tool to position the new EYE. Merge/Merge Down.

SAVE

Go to Preset Shapes Tool and locate the Triangle. Keeping your Foreground BLACK change your Background color a yellowish orange for the beak, I used #FFB85D. Make a small triangle near the lower part of the HEAD starting low and dragging up and to the left (or right, whichever you prefer). Rotate it into the position you like. Click on the Pen Tool and add a NODE to the RIGHT and LEFT of the center NODE. Use the mouse to position these so that the wide part of the triangle has a slight curve.

Right click on your Vector layer and Convert to Raster Layer. Name this layer BEAK.

I wanted to add a little dimension to the BEAK, so I used Effects/3-D/Inner Bevel using these settings.

Make a NEW Raster layer and name it HAIR. With the Paint Brush, size 5, make some HAIR on top of the HEAD.

SAVE

FEET

Go to Preset Shapes Tool and locate the Rounded Rectangle. Keeping your Foreground BLACK and your Background color the yellowish orange that I used for the beak, #FFB85D. Make a small triangle near the lower part of the canvas. Click on the Pen Tool and holding down the Control key, add NODES like I have below (IMAGE 1) to shape the foot. You might want to ZOOM to 300 or 400 so that you can see the NODES better. Or you can shape it in your own design. It is okay if the top of the leg goes over the BODY, as we will fix it in a second. See IMAGE 2 for finished FOOT.

SAVE

Duplicate the FOOT layer. Image/Mirror. Use the Deform Tool to rotate and position the other FOOT. When you are satisfied, you can Merge/Merge Down. Click on the FOOT layer and drag it BELOW the BODY layer.

Go to Effects/3-D/Inner Bevel and use the same settings as for the BEAK.

SAVE

Your image should now look like this. He looks funny at an angle, but it will make since when he is animated.

Merge/Merge Visible, Resize and Crop to desired size.

I want a TUBE of my Penguin but I want him standing straighter. I made a copy (Shift + D) and used the Deform Tool to straighten him up. Crop the image to get rid of the excess blank space. Then go to File/Export/Picture Tube. Save as Penguin and click Okay. You now have a TUBE of your penguin.

Now for the animation part.
