Locating Folders 3

3 ways to locate files/folders

  1. Accessing folders to use in PSP
  2. Locating files using Start/Explore
  3. Locating files using the Search method

3. Locating files using the Search method

1. Let's say you saved an image, but forgot which folder you saved it in AND you remembered the name that you gave it. LEFT click on the START button in the lower left corner of your screen. Scroll up and to the RIGHT to the word "SEARCH" and click on it. Again, remember that I am using Windows XP, so if you have a different version of Windows, your settings might be slightly different.

2. You will get a LARGE window like below. Click on "All files and folders".

3. You will now get another window. Type in the name of your file. Click on the ARROW by where is says "Look in:" and has your Hard Drives listed, pick which Hard Drive you want to look through. Since I have two Hard Drives, both are listed together, so I usually pick just my C: Drive, as my D: Drive is for classes and homework. Then click SEARCH. Sit back and relax. This will take a few minutes, all depending on how many folders it has to search through.

4. As you can see, I have three of the images with the same wording in their name. This is with the THUMBNAIL view.....

5. I clicked on VIEW and changed the feature to DETAILS. Now I have a list of where the images are located. Just hover the mouse over the folder location and you will get a strip appear that will have the folder log. As you can see by my strip, I have a lot of sub-folders in my "My Documents" folder. It would have been easier (and shorter) if I would have clicked on the DESKTOP (since I know my folder was on the desktop). But I wanted to show you what the screens would look like.

6. Now you can go to the folder you need to find your image.

6. We are not done yet... *S* If you noticed, I typed in the full image name "birdhouse-sorcha.jpg" and got three different locations. you need not add the extention if you do not remember it, it will locate all images and documents with those words. but what if I just entered "birdhouse"? This time I got a LOT of files listed, which means I need to go thru this list to find the exact file I want.

6. If you know the name AND extention (.jpg, .psp, .gif, .txt, etc.) and do not want tons of items to appear, you can do it a faster way. Click the BACK button and retype in the file name, but this time add an ASTERIC ( * ) at the beginning of the file name. I typed in *1birdhouse-sorcha.jpg and only got the file I asked for. Then it will ONLY look for that particular file.

If you have any problems, please feel free to email me by clicking my name, SORCHA
